Why Real Estate Agents Aren't Getting Listings (and What to Do Instead)

2026-09-01 · 6 min read

It's not you. It's your strategy.

If you're a real estate agent and you're not getting listings, you're not alone. A lot of agents are working nonstop, posting occasionally, reaching out to people, maybe even buying leads, and still not seeing consistent listing opportunities. At Krista Mashore Coaching we hear the same three questions every week: "Is it me?" "Is the market just bad?" "Why are other agents getting listings and I'm not?"

Here's the truth most people won't tell you: it's not that you're not working hard. It's that your strategy isn't built for how people choose agents today. Sellers don't pick the agent they know of, they pick the agent they SEE. And increasingly, they pick the agent their search results and their AI assistant put in front of them. If you're not consistently visible, you're invisible.

What's actually going wrong

Most agents still rely on the old playbook: waiting for referrals, random social posting, cold calling they hate, and hoping people remember them. Every one of those depends on luck or grind. None of them builds the thing that actually wins listings: a market that already trusts you before the need arises.

Meanwhile, the agents pulling away are running a system that does three jobs at once: it positions them as the expert, builds trust before any conversation happens, and keeps them top of mind daily. That's the whole listing attraction model in one sentence: win the listing before you arrive.

Step 1: Show up on video, even if you hate it

Video is the fastest way to build trust, show your knowledge, and make people feel like they already know you. You don't need to be perfect, you need to be consistent. Start with what sellers are already thinking about: "What's happening in the market this week?" "Three mistakes sellers are making right now." "What your home is worth right now."

And don't let the videos sit unseen: reach ads put them in front of your whole market for coffee money, which is what turns a camera habit into a listing pipeline. The full craft is on our short-form video page.

Step 2: Talk to sellers, not other agents

Most agents post content only other agents care about, awards, closings, brokerage news. Shift the camera: talk to homeowners, potential sellers, people thinking about moving. Ask yourself one question before every piece of content: "What would a seller need to hear to trust me?" Then make that.

Step 3: Build local authority and stay consistent

You don't need to be famous, you need to be known in your market. Neighborhood videos, local updates, community highlights, market insights: the Community Market Leader® playbook. And in 2026 there's a new layer: sellers are asking AI assistants who the best local agent is. AEO is how you become the answer.

Then comes the step where most agents fail: consistency. You don't need to go viral. You need to show up repeatedly, for months, because recognition, trust, and opportunity all compound, and they all reset to zero when you quit.

The fix, in one next step
